GOOD VIBES ONLY: A Guide To Choosing A New Sex Toy

Whether this is the first time buying a sex toy or you're a pleasure product enthusiast and this is your 100th purchase, browsing through the vast variety available can leave you a little overwhelmed for choice. This guide is to provide you with a better understanding of what to look for when you invest in a sex toy, from size to the material, we've got you covered!

At Venus Sexual Wellness we pride ourselves with being able to provide our customers with beautiful body safe products, we want to make sure you know exactly what has gone into your purchase and in turn your body. Unsurprisingly, not every adult toy store or company has this idea of complete transparency in mind.

When it comes to buying a sex toy generally you will consider the shape and size of the toy and where on the body it will be used. I want to try something a little different and hopefully provide you with some information on the different materials used for our sexual pleasure products.

A toy or tool made of a non-porous material is the best option when it comes to choosing an intimate product. Non-porous means the material(s) of the toy will not harbour any bacteria in it's pores which would make it unhygienic and could cause a bacteria infection such as thrush for the toy owner in the future.

Platinum Cured Silicone

The most popular material for sex toys is cured silicone, a strong but flexible rubber-like material. It’s non-porous and quite versatile, being used for many tools from sturdy dildos and  anal beads to whips ball gags, these products are top quality!

Compatible with water based lubricants only, silicone and oil-based lubes can break down the integrity of the toy.

ABS Plastic

ABS or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene is another popular material used in manufacturing sex products, it is a non-porous, hard plastic and the safest when it comes to plastic toys. Pleasure products that commonly made from ABS are vibrators (both regular and bullet size) such as our Gaia Eco, vibrating eggs and kegal balls.

Compatible with all lubricants.

Borosilicate Pyrex Glass

Borosilicate glass is the safest and commonly used glass for sex toys as it is non-porous.  This glass is made up of silica and boron trioxide, it is resistant to thermal shock making it perfect when paired with temperature play. Borosilicate glass can be blown into many beautifully sensual toys like our Cervix Serpent.

Compatible with all lubricants.

Gemstone crystal sexual pleasure products come in the form of yoni pleasure wands or yoni eggs used to strengthen the pelvic floor and increase sexual sensation. These are made from natural gemstone and then handcrafted into various shapes. While these are beautiful and empowering pieces to have in your toy box, be wary of the quality of the wands as these need to be specially finished and tested to ensure they are non-porous and safe for use. Yoni Pleasure Palace provides us with this beautifully handcrafted Clear Quartz pleasure wand.

Compatible with all lubricants.

A porous toy is made of a material that has microscopic pores that will hold nasty bacteria. These types of materials tend to break down after being used and can leach chemicals into your body causing harmful side effects such as affecting hormone levels, the reproductive system, causing rashes and even causing cancer.

Some porous/dangerous materials to look out for in pleasure products:

  • Phthalates
  • Rubber
  • PVC
  • Phenol
  • Chloride
  • Vinyl

Size & Shapes

Now that we have the safe material specs out of the way, we need to start thinking about what size and shape!

It’s no secret that sex toys come in all shapes and sizes and while it’s great fun buying a new and adventurous toy, you don’t want it to arrive and you realise it’s not doing what you wanted it to.

Smaller toys come in the form of vibrating eggs, bullets and dildos on the slimmer side. While they look small, they pack a punch and can come in delicious shapes such as the Luxe Ai, a slim 17.8 cm silicone dildo with four smooth ridges.

Girthier toys can be seen in the form of the Ruse Big Poppa, a larger silicone internal and external dildo 20 cm long and a 5 cm width. Two fantastic but definitely larger toys are massaging wands, the Doxy wand and Limited Edition Ashley Lukashevky by Le Wand, two powerful devices used for external, clitoral and vulva stimulation.

Some other things to consider when looking at sex toys is what area is going to be stimulated and what kind of stimulation you’ll need.

Internal stimulation can be a vibrator, plug or dildo specially crafted to reach the g or p-spot such as a Revive G-Tease, with a uniquely curved head to specifically stimulate the G-spot. External stimulation can be found in the form of clitoral air stimulators like the Lelo Sona or cock rings that provide vibration or restrict blood flow to the penis.

There are a lot of cheap and tools out there and it can be daunting or even put you off trying a new sex toy all together. Buying a decent sexual pleasure product can be expensive but when you’ve researched what to look for in the quality of the product and the pleasure it brings, it’s a truly worthy investment.
